This is true. This village in SW Uganda is the community where the modern day plague of HIV was spawned, and it is here that Caring Hands is laying down the foundations of a new primary school to stem the tide of disease, ignorance, and spiritual darkness. The epidemiological studies conducted by various universities show that the strain of HIV virus that originated here took flight, moved up the road to Masaka, then to Kampala, onto Entebbe, and then to the rest of the world. At times when I stand in the polluted streets of Kasensero, I cannot get my arms around the thought that hundreds of millions of people are dead and dying of HIV due to the “environment” that was created in this community during the 1970s and 1980s. Kasensero is located in extreme southwest Uganda, with the Tanzanian border just a short boat ride away while Rwanda and the Republic of Congo boundaries lie a few miles to the southwest and west respectively. It is at this juncture of geography, time, and events that man’s lust for power and sex proved to be a silent explosion of death and disease that continues through today. The 1970s and 1980s were a time of tumultuous war and upheaval in these four adjoining countries. Large movements of military troops crossing back and forth amongst these borders via this small fishing community during the Idi Amin years, coupled with skyrocketing levels of prostitution, fueled this explosion of HIV infection. Most HIV experts believe that HIV or “Slims Disease” as it was known earlier, first originated in West Africa and migrated east, killingn individuals who may have eaten chimpanzees infected with an early primate form of HIV, and the virus eventually mutated to a human form leading to the death of it’s host. But the virus survived in the wilds, and it’s very existence in the remotest jungles was it’s limiting factor. All this changed in the 1980s and in a little town called Kasensero.

…..Next Page……

Kasensero is what we in America call “a tough nut to crack”. Disease, lack of formal education, superstition, old traditions, prostitution, suspicion, and lack of economic stimulation plus a myriad of other factors make bringing hope to Kasensero a “challenge”. During our five years of ministry to this community, we have been knocked down a few times during our fight, but each time God has put us back on our feet. I personally like Jesus’ scriptural encouragement and admonition, “that the gates of Hell will not prevail”, and it is truly this kind of spiritual warfare that is being waged in Kasensero. If you decide to join us on the front line and see Kasensero for yourself, you will learn what the Scriptures mean, “not by power or by might, but by My Spirit says the Lord”. Proverbs 3:5 might also take on a new meaning to you. But after you start learning to stop trusting in your own resources, and instead leaning on God, Kasensero sort of grows on you, and depending on where you sleep in town, the growth could be either literally or figuratively. What can I say, you have to be somewhat of an adventurer to travel to Africa, and you definitely need to bring along a good sense of humor. You will be tested in all manners of living, but I can tell you, it’s worth every minute of it.

Now the crux of the matter. One of the many things Caring Hands is initiating in Kasensero is the construction of a new primary school. Wehave hired the lawyers, purchased the land, leveled the ground, developed the blueprints, set up the proper committees, and now it is up to you. We need your help in providing the funds needed to get this project off the ground. After meeting and working with the governmental survey teams, our plans have been certified by the Ugandan government and the school’s construction will be supervised by them as well, insuring a well built school for the children that will last for decades. If you could see what passes for some school buildings in Uganda you might think twice about enrolling your own children in such places, but the Kasensero Hope of Life School will be a first rate facility. You will notice that a copy of the blueprints and an artist’s rendition of the school’s layout are posted for your inspection. Posted is a list of the construction costs and other projected expenditures for you to look over. ……continues on page 3….

This a serious project, and the biggest one that Caring Hands has taken on so far. We have helped build five other facilities here in Uganda while assisting other missionary organizations, but Kasensero HOL would become our new flagship school. We are all very excited about the prospects of bringing formal education to Kasensero, and giving these local children a chance to fulfill their dreams in life. All this comes with a price tag of course, and in this case, the experts have estimated the cost for the entire project to be close to 600,000 US dollars. Should it be necessary, one of our ideas is to build the project in three phases. The first phase would consist of the completion of all three classroom buildings as a unit, but using one of the structures as a temporary administration building with the other two buildings employed as classrooms until funds arrive for the later phases of construction. The first phase would also include the construction of at least one elevated pit latrine with plumbing included for the possible change over to a pressurized flushing system in the future. The second and third phases would include a separate administration building, kitchen, dining hall, two dormitories and two student proctor apartments constructed in such order as the building committee deems best. With completion of the entire project, we expect an enrollment of 200 to 300 primary care students. Tuition fees will be charged, and we will determine which students will pay fees as opposed to the true orphans who will also represent a percentage of our enrollment. Your help in sponsoring a child’s education or even a teacher’s salary will be instrumental to the school’s success, but more about that later.

Thanks again for listening.
